The Matterhorn looks almost too perfect to be real, and seeing it rise above the rooftops for the first time genuinely lands. The village is car-free and well preserved, the terrain vast, the snow reliable at altitude, and the glacier skiing runs well into May. Summer earns its own visit for the hiking alone.
